President's Message

Dr. Tony Kim

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! This will be my last letter to you as a President of WSPMA. It was an honor to serve you and thank you for allowing me to serve. First, I would like to express my deep loss of our friend and past board member Dr. Daren Vernon who has passed on Feb. 3, 2019. He was very passionate about our profession and committed to WSPMA to his last day. I will miss him terribly.

As I write this newsletter article, we are beginning week four of the 2019 legislative session. Our legislative team of Gail McGaffick and Melanie Stewart always have our back, currently reviewing the titles of over 1,500 bills that have been introduced thus far. Together with WSPMA’s Legislative Committee, chaired by Drs. Molina Kochhar and Susan Scanlan, key bills are reviewed during weekly conference calls. Please see articles in this newsletter concerning the 2019 legislative session. Read More

Opt-In to the Find a Physician Directory

Our WSPMA Find a Physician Directory is an included (no extra fee!) member benefit that caters to Washington locals and offers members the opportunity to collect genuine leads from potential patients in their area.

You may also view the full database in alphabetical order by skipping the search criteria section and just clicking "Search."

Not sure if you are opted in?

Follow the instructions in our Find a Physician FAQ to learn how to opt in, and feel free to contact the WSPMA Office with any questions.

Update on Opioid Prescribing

Gail McGaffick, JD, Legislative Attorney

The following is an update on opioid prescribing. It includes information on anticipated modifications to the Podiatric Medical Board’s (PMB) opioid rules, as well as information concerning legislation impacting opioid prescribing that is being considered by the 2019 Legislature. Read more

Act Now to Oppose Business and Operations Tax Increase

The Governor’s budget includes a whopping 66% increase in B&O taxes in the service category, from 1.5% to 2.5%. The increase could begin as early as July 1, 2019, the start of the new budget cycle. This increase would impact DPMs who currently pay B&O.

Even if you work as an employee within a non-hospital based health care setting, it will impact your employer’s bottom line, which in turn will impact you. Hospitals are exempt from this increase. Keep reading to find out what you can do to stop this increase.

WSPMA Legislative Update

Gail McGaffick, JD, Legislative Attorney
Melanie Stewart, JD, Legislative Lobbyist

The 2019 legislative session began on January 14, 2019, the second Monday in January. Because bills could be pre-filed as early as December 1, 2018, by the time the session started in mid-January, there were almost 300 bills formally introduced on the first day. And as of February 19, the Legislature is considering over 2,000 individual bills, an astonishing number generated, in part, because of strong Democrat majorities in both the House and Senate for the first time in this decade. Read More
